Curious on why I was asked this question.

Why would a psychiatrist ask me to answer such questions as, "How many stripes are on the American flag?" Or ask what do these items have in common, ie...chair and a table or an apple and an orange, etc.? Why ask basic math questions? Or what a certain saying means to me.
