Hand Pains
Sent to Health Experts October 10 01:27 AM

Just recently, my girlfriend said that she had "sharp shooting pains" in her hand. This started as a mild pain at the base of her hand, not the palm portion, but the top of the hand. This gradually became worse, to the point that her whole hand was swollen and hurt very much and could not move it. Of course there have been some suggestions such as that of carpal tunnel, but I was reading that CTS doesn't directly relate to her working in a computer. Well, any help with this subject would be greatly appreciated to try and make her feel better. Thank you very much.

It sounds like the nerves have been affected, possibly by the position she is forced to be in while typing on a keyboard. There are things she can request at work, such as ergonomic keyboard and chair and screen height adjustment. Also, wearing a wrist brace will help a lot for support. The inflammation of muscles and the joint of the hand and wrist can be calmed down by taking Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil also names that are Ibuprofen) morning and night, 800 mg twice a day. If her wrist gets inflamed and/or numb and tingley, she needs to get in to see a hand specialist or orthopedic doctor as she may just have CTS or other nerve problems that need further investigation! If her job refuses to comply, she should have a case for workman's comp, and/or disability pay. Collecting this will help with her recovery and also help others working there to have the equipment needed to not be injured also. Good luck!

Reply to Mia's Post: That answer cleared up almost everything, except one more thing, if you could please answer this, she said that the pain started in her thumb, and gradually worked its way around her hand. The feeling of numbness, and tingling will probably gradually stop with the taking of medicine, since it already slowed down somewhat from taking 2 advils. would there be anything else that could be done tonight so the pain stops, and if so, what else? your help would be greatly appreciated.
