why would there be pain with insertion of the penis in the vagina?

My daughter has just started haviing sex and she has asked me a few questions I am unable to answer and she is to embarrssed to go to the doctor with it. She says when he is trying to insert his penis in it causes alot of pain. (the hymen has been broken) She said to her it feels like there is something blocking the hole inside. After serveral tries and moving in different positions it goes thru. But she has alot of swelling and pain for a couple of days afterwards. Can this be explained and does need to have it checked out?

Has she tried using any type of lubrication? Does she have any bleeding or discharge after intercourse?

Reply to Amanda's Post: Yes they have used lubrication also. No bleeding or discharge afterwards. Just swelling and it is painful. They have tried everything.
