Sent to Health Experts October 14, 2006 8:44 a.m.

I have a type of burning pain in my hips especially when I bend forward a little. I am talking to a Doctor and he wants me to get x-rays so he can look to see if I have arthritis.
I have been taking Glucosomene and Condroitin for 6 months or so but the pain is there.
It does seem to subside a little when I exercise and stretch and even some when I walk 2-4 miles BUT after exercise or walking it returns and annoys me. It has been there for 4-5 years now and I feel it a lot when i try to sleep. It makes it harder for me to fall to sleep nights. What can I do to east the pain and buring in my hips???

Hi,
There can be a few possibilities in your case-

  • arthritis of the hip - as your doctor has pointed out this is the first possibility considering your age. Despite taking chondroitin and glucosamine this can occur because of the wear and tear of the joints.
  • Osteoporosis of hip - this is the second most common possibility again at your age. If you have a low milk and milk product intake, donot take any calcium supplements or have been on long term steroids then you might be developing osteoarthritis. This can be daignosed on a bone scan.
  • Bursitis - bursa is a fluid filled sac allowing smooth movement between two surfaces at joints. As you seem to be a keep person towards exercising with weights, inflammation of the bursa can occur leading to pain.
  • inflammation of the tendon of muscles, again due to excessive exercise can occur.

The bursitis and tendon inflammation can be ruled out by a complete examination and after ruling out arthritis. Your doctor is right in first getting an X-ray to diagnose arthritis. Once that is ruled out, then only he will go for investigating the other possibilities. I would advise you to exercise or walk only till it is comfortable to you and take anti-inflammatories like tylenol/motrin, till a complete diagnosis is made.
