Question

I lost my sense of smell and taste after being sick.

Sent to Health Experts October 17, 2006 7:26 p.m.

I was pretty sick about 4 or 5 months ago, sick for about a week and a half. I had a fever, was very weak, just no strength. Since then I can't smell or taste anything. I remember about the time it started I thought I could smell smoke quite a bit. In fact, at work in the office one day I asked everyone if they could smell smoke or exhaust fumes. Can I or will I get my senses back?

Hi! I have heard this complaint for 20 years. And there is no one answer. Often as we get older our senses are not as sensitive and when we are ill, we can lose the sense of smell or taste. This should return. However, the sinuses are the usually the culprit. What you can try is strong smells to re-stimulate you sense of smell and taste. Taste comes from smell very much so. Try strong odors to see if this has an effect. If this does not, you must see an ENT doctor to work with you. Sometimes there are sinus polyps that affect this. You need to have this checked. But it is a solvable problem. Often steriods will help. But only a doctor can tell you that for sure. If you have any other questions, please ask.
