HPV is caused by a virus. It is considered an STD because it is spread by skin to skin contact with an infected person. You likely found out that you have HPV because of an abnormal pap smear. HPV is very, very common and the main concern is trying to remove the abnormal cells from the cervix. In some cases, HPV cells can cause cervical cancer but the chances of this happening are low especially if you continue to follow up with your doctor.
