Question

Birth control and migraines.

Sent to Health Experts October 20, 2006 7:43 p.m.

Hi, I recently had my birth control pill prescription refilled and noticed on the pill information sheet that I got that you should stop taking immediately if you have a migraine with an aura. I have always suffered from migraines but never had a migraine with an aura until I started taking the birth control pill (10 weeks ago). I read somewhere on a website that tri-cycling can reduce this chance of stroke and that's what I do and I was hoping that I could continue taking the pill. Otherwise, I have been on depo before and I did like it but I was worried about the loss of bone mass associated with it. (I was on it for 3 years). Can I continue to take the pill and if not would it be okay to go back on the depo?

I got my first migraine with an aura about 9 weeks ago. I was seeing flashing lights and wavy lines across my vision for about 20 minutes and then sure enogh got a migraine. I'm on Microgestrin Fe 1.5/30. I don't know if I loss bone mass on the depo - I never had a bone scan, I just know that when I first started the depo, the recommended not being on it for more than 2 years. As far as other medical problems go, I do take zoloft for depression and anxiety and zyrtec for chronic hives. I'm 20 years old.

Hello,

I suggest to you to inform your health care provider as soon as possible about getting migraine with aura and ask if she or he can change your BCP with another kind of BCP.

First of all, my paperwork says to stop immediately and I can't get ahold of a doctor again until Monday. Should I stop taking it this weekend or just wait until Monday to talk to the doctor? Also, how long do you think it is safe to be on depo for?
