I just found a small (big pimple like) bump on the inner surface of my cheek. It does not really hurt. I can kind of move it around with my tongue. I almost want to pop it. I am sure it is something that has developed in the last day or two. Do you know what it is or how I should treat this?

REPLIED Check Mark

Hello,

It may be a canker sore. Regardless of what it may be, I strongly suggest that you do not "pop" it, as this would cause pain, irriation, take longer to heal and possibly cause an infection.

I would avoid spicy or any irritating foods like citrus and carbonated drinks. Rinse the area with warm salt water a few times a day, especially after meals. Avoid touching it with your tongue.

If this does not heal with the next five days, or it becomes larger, I would suggest that you make an appointment with an ENT (ear, nose & throat) specialist. This is the type of specialist best suited to examing this type of lesion and providing any treatment deemed necessary.

Do you smoke?

I do smoke cigars from time to time and that is what worried me. I thought maybe I bit my check, but I do not remember doing that. It is a little too high for that, but impossible.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

It is not impossible. You may have bit the inside of your cheek without realising it. Chances are, this is a simple canker sore. What is very important is to keep an eye on it. In some cases a canker sore may take 5-7 days to heal. Others are fone in a day or too. I just had a bad one on the roof of my mouth which was quite painful. It took over a week to completely resolve.

Check with a doctor if this does not resolve.

Smoking cigars increases your risk of oral cancers.
