The doctor probably took biopsies of the area where you have colitis too. He wants to see what kind of cells are present. He also probably did a culture to see if there are any unusual bacteria present that needs to be treated. Polyps are always best to be removed, whether they are cancerous or not. There should be nothing in the colon that can cause an obstruction.
At your age and sudden onset, your colitis was probably due to some sort of bacteria or viral infection. The polyps themselves did not cause this.
