This
information indicates that RSD is divided into two types -- with,
and without, nerve involvement -- and that symptoms vary (in both number and type) widely among patients.
Diagnosis is arrived at more through ruling out (eliminating) other
causes of the symptoms which are present. RSD is referred to as a
'syndrome' because it is a label appled to a varying group of
symptoms. Because of this, treatments will also vary among
patients -- and will, to an extent be by 'trial and error-- in order to
determine what works best.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association may have some addition helpful information.
