Hi, I have been taking 10mg of medroxyprogesterone 12 days every month for the past 2 years and still do not have a period. I also have had 2 uterine ultrasounds this past year to check my uterus and my doctor says it is fine. Also, when I take this medicine I feel very unwell. Am I in danger to continue this medicine? Is there anything else I can take or do? I am 39 yrs. old and 70 lbs. overweight and have slowly lost 58 lbs. over the last 2 years due to gastric lapband surgery. Please help!!

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy).

The serious side effect of medroxyprogesterone is the possibility to develop thrombotic disorders, including thrombophebitis, cerebrovascular disorders, retinal thrombosis, pulmonary embolism. Besides that, it may cause depression somnolence, nausea, diarrhea.

You should talk to your doctor if you can take oral birth control pills with both estrogen and progestin. With both hormones, you may have less side effects. The other option is treating with dopamine agonists, such as parlodel. However, it is not suitable for every body.

If you have further questions, please feel free to ask.
