Greetings R Palmer,

The treatment of CHD depends on the age of the child and the degree of instability of the affected hip.
Usually, if the child is younger that 6 months old and instability is detected on examination, a Pavlik hardness is used for hip "reduction" (a medical term meaning placing the hip back in it's socket). Here is a link to an image of such a harness.
If the harness is not successful or if the child is older than 6 months, surgery and/or casting of the joint will be necessary.

Sincerely,

Dr.Bernon
