My wife has an ear infection or something. I took her to the Dr. where he prescribed an antibiotic. This was Wed. the 28th. she was in the bathroom getting ready for a bath and she coughed, heard a pop in her ear, took a cotton ball out and there was blood on it. Should I rush her to the hospital or get another cold beer and watch the rest of the game?

Optional Information:
Male, Age: 49, Texas

Nothing. It just happened and I'm not sure what to try. This is real new to me if you can imagine.

Hi,

You should take her to the hospital ASAP.

She was likely to be having an ear infection called ASOM (Acute Suppurative Otitis Media) and what happened when she coughed was that there was an increase of pressure in her ears and this caused fluid which had collected inside her ears to pop out by perforating her ear membrane.

She needs an immediate check up to assure that this is so and also other medicines like an ear drop which was probably not given earlier when the ear was intact. So you should consult a doctor for this ASAP.

Relist:
My wife's ear stopped bleeding while i was typing the first question and it was very little at that. But knowing the answer i got and the fact she is stuborn she doesn't want to go to the E.R., with good reason. We have (2) hospital's here and their both shall we say lack luster. Can she wait til Monday to see her regular Dr.?

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

I concur with Dr Evans that your wife in all likelihood ruptured her eardrum. The issue here is that no one knows what size that tear is; little tears often can heal on their own, big ones MUST be repaired. If it is not repaired, or does not heal, there is a potential for even worse infections than she already has. In addition, if it heals wrongly, scar tissue can form which can affect her hearing and potentially lead to cyst formation.

There is no way to tell the size of a perforation by the amount of blood...so just because she only seemed to bleed a little does not mean it was a small tear. Remember, the eardrum itself is tiny, so what you think is a small amount of blood may imdicate a large tear of a small object.

For all these reasons, I do aggree that she should be seen as soon as possible, given that we dont know the size of the tear. However that choice is certainly yours. I include a link about perforated eardrums for your further information. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/perforated_eardrum/article_em.htm

I wish you and your wife the best,

Sincerely,

Susan

Thank you Nurse Susan. I hope this will sway her to go to see a Dr. now. Little doubt as to the answer Dr.Evans gave but it doesn't hurt to ask right? Like I say my wife is stuborn and our medical options are limited at the E.R.'s. Thank both of you again for your help. Inexpensive (cheap) help that is.
