Sent to Health Experts December 05, 2007 6:56 p.m.

my six year old daughter has an ear infection in her left ear. She has been to the doctor a few times in the last two weeks. The first medicine has done nothing for her. We have gotten pain drops and a new medice for her. She is in very much pain right now, that she can not quit crying. The pain drops do nothing for her. I have tried childrens tylenol with no help. Is there anything else I can do to relieve the pain?

Dr. Steve: Hi--this is dr. steve...is this danny?

Dr. Steve: welcome to chat
Customer (name blocked for privacy): thanks
Dr. Steve: what is the name of the ear drops [for pain] u used?
Customer (name blocked for privacy): antipyrine and benzocaine otic solution usp
Dr. Steve: did u use WITH a cotton pledget?
Customer (name blocked for privacy): no, supposed to use the dropper withit, 4drops as needed every hour if nesc.
Dr. Steve: i find it's MUCH more effective if used WITH the pledget..
Customer (name blocked for privacy): what is the pledget
Dr. Steve: it expands when moistened w/ the drops...and so pushes itself agst the ear canal skin, thereby easing the pain [it is a topical anesthetic]
Dr. Steve: it's like a little wick
Dr. Steve: about 1.55 cm long
Dr. Steve: u insert into ear canal
Dr. Steve: u can go to the phcy and ask for a dozen pledgets or so
Customer (name blocked for privacy): did not get with the drops can I get this at a drug store
Dr. Steve: u'll find that the pain drops help her much more that way
Dr. Steve: yes--any drugstore has pledgets
Dr. Steve: then, i would also give child. motrin every 4 hrs
Customer (name blocked for privacy): are they on a shelf or do you have to get from a pharmacist
Dr. Steve: i find this helps more than tylenol, for ear pn
Dr. Steve: prob. BEHIND the shelf, but don't need prescription
Dr. Steve: it always worked on MY kids, anyway
Customer (name blocked for privacy): I have given her tylenol about 2 hours ago, should I wait to give her motrin
Dr. Steve: yes--wait at least 30-40 mins
Dr. Steve: but try to get the pledgets now, and instill w/ drops
Dr. Steve: u can repeat the drops EVERY 1 hr
Customer (name blocked for privacy): o.k. I will try to do that, thank you
Dr. Steve: YW
Dr. Steve: hope she's better soon
Dr. Steve: take care.
Customer (name blocked for privacy): thanks again
