Sent to Health Experts March 01 7:24 p.m.

I hot it lightly in the head by an elbow playing basketball yesterday. It was a light hit, but directly in the temple. Now that area is tender and I have a headache localized to that spot. My jaw is a little sore as well. I have not nausea or dizziness and my vision in fine. I am also able to concentrate and do school work. I am a little worried. Should I be?

Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Playing basketball does have its bad points doesn't it? Your question, "I am a little worried. Should I be?"

The temple is located just to the front of and a little (just a little) higher than what we call the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). This is the joint that allows us to move our jaw up and down. Any trauma to this area would likely cause pain to radiate throughout the jaw. A headache isn't uncommon when you strike your head, nor is tenderness at the site. The things to look for with head injuries is the inability to coordinate, such as walk without staggering; bleeding from the ears, mouth or nose; unequal pupils; light sensitivity to your eyes; nausea; vomiting; dizziness; ringing in the ears; double vision; blurred vision; inability to follow commands appropriately.

I am providing you with a website where you can read more about head injuries. http://www.righthealth.com/Health/symptoms%20of%20a%20head%20injury-s?lid=goog-ads-sb-4163850500&gclid=CKbv4L2Y7ZECFSYEkgodoFi2qA

Listen, is you have further concerns or if any symptoms develop (which I doubt they will) be certain to see a physician immediately. Take care...

Thanks for the response. These headaches are pretty bad. I guess my worry is that there could be some bleeding that I don't know of. How sensitive is the temple area and how hard does it need to get hit for serious injury or concussion.
