Severe itching at elbow area on left elbow; patient is left handed; going on for several months. Itching mostly at night and wakes her; itching so severe, has caused bruising in area. Nothing on the skin can be seen; no topic ointments helps--only icing area when itching starts. Patient had tennis elbow issues two weeks ago; got steriod shot, that helped itching to stop for one day; reappeared next with vengence and has not stopped; Right elbow have beginning itching, not as severe. What kind of doctor can should she go to; her internist has not solved this issue. Please advise how to solve this problem.

Dear Elizabeth,
Sorry to hear about the problem.
The right doctor for confirming the diagnosis would be a Dermatologist (Skin Specialist). He would do certain tests, maybe blood or skin tests and then let you know as to the cause of this condition and its treatment.
The common things taht come to mind (& I am sure would have been treated by your internist) are Eczema, Lichen SImplex Chronicus etc.
The exact diagnosis requires a dermatological evaluation.

Dr Gupta: I was not satisfied with your kind answer to my itching; I have seen both internist and skin doctor; sorry I did not make myself clear. There is NOTHING ON MY ARM, EXCEPT BRUISING FROM CONSTANT ITCHING AT NIGHT.

Both doctors gave me shots of cortizone in different spots as well as antihistamines for day and night and another steriod cream. I DON'T WANT medicines; I want answers; Both of them say "I don't know why your itching started and has gotten this far; I can only treat the itching with more shots and pills day and night. I want to get to the source of the itch and all the questions they asked, which you would know, i.e. laundry soaps, washing soaps, anything bothering me and stressing me out; but nothing fits. Can you help me in a different way? I do not have exema or the other thing you sent me on the website.

I gather my money for your answer has been paid so I guess you don't have to answer, but it you could, that would be nice. Elizabeth
