i wrecked my bike and have hurt my shoulder. there is pain ...

i wrecked my bike and have hurt my shoulder. there is pain inbetween my spine and shoulder blade and at the end of the muscle on top where it connects near the end of my collar bone. How long should i immobilize it? or should i do something else?

Hi! First of all, if it hurts that bad now, it could get worse and you should probably run up to the ER and have them make sure nothing is torn or fracture. As far as immobilizing it, from the way you described it, you would need a soft sling with a total elbow support. That can be purchase at any high quality drug store. However, here is the rub, you want support, not confinement, the area still needs a constant supply of blood to heal. Next, apply ice, not heat. Check for severe bruising and swelling. You may need anywhere from a few days to a week before you feel you do not need the support. It depends of the nature of the injury. Monitor the pain with over the counter, and please, it you feel worse, go to the hospital.
