Sent to Health Experts May 07, 2006 11:23 p.m.

I have a mole on my arm near my elbow that has become itchy and bleeding occasionally. The mole hasn't changed in appearance and doesn't match any of the ABCDs described in all articles about dangerous moles. According to the pictures I've seen it looks like a healthy mole. I know that I need to check it out by a dermatologist but my question is - is it an emergency to check it out or can I wait a couple of weeks? Please respond ASAP. Thank you.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

The ABCDs are a useful guide to evaluate moles (nevi), and the E (for exposure, that is to sun and sunburns) is often forgotten but also important. Nevertheless, while your mole might not be assymetric, have an irregular border, unusual color, or diameter larger than a pencil eraser, if it is bleeding and itchy this is also a point of concern. Certain skin cancers, like squamous and basal cell cancer, while often not as malignant as melanoma, can present in this manner. So I would recommend that you do have it checked out as soon as possible by a dermatologist. In general, moles shouldn't be itchy or bleed, and so this is a bit unusual and should be checked out as soon as possible.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Take care.
