Lately during my weight training, when I check my pulse sometimes it appears to skip a beat . In the past few years of checking, this has never happened.(I have been checking the pulse at my wrist.)

A skipped beat is usually a premature ventricular contraction or "PVC." The beat is actually not skipped, but so early that the heart does not have time to fill before the beat occurs. This makes the outpurt for that one beat so low that you can't feel a pulse with it. It is pretty benign unless there are a lot of them in a row or they increase in number and start occurring while at rest. This can be related to potassium levels. You can have an EKG and a simple blood test to be sure that there is no other reason. But sometimes they will not occur during the short time that you are having the cardiogram recording. If these are frequent or bothersome you could have a "Holter" monitor, which is a 24 hour recording while you go about all your normal activities and keep a diary of activity and symptoms. Many people have occasional PVCs and never know it. But since you are aware that these are new for you, it is best that you visit the doc and be checked out. 49 is certainly not too young to get a baseline EKG for future comparison in case things change again. If you notice more of these, go easy on the exercise until you are sure what they are.
