Question

Menstrual Abnormality

Sent to Health Experts October 07, 2006 12:38 p.m.

Hi,

I am a 36 year old female, no children, and have had the easiest of menstrual cycles since I was twelve. Very little cramping if any, I would bleed for 3-4 days not to heavy and you could set your watch by me until this month. I had breast tenderness before my period which is normal but my period was several days late and the breast pain lasted much longer than usual. Also my period is more like staining and spotty and has lasted for over a week now. On top of all this I have what feels to be like sciatic pain in my left lower back/buttock sometimes shooting into my hip and twinging behind my thigh. The pain is to the point this morning re I needed help getting out of bed. Once I'm up and moving I'm okay but when I sit and lie down it hurts. I guess I'm wondering if the pain could be related to the period problem and not sciatica at all.

Thanks

Hello,

I believe your hip and back pain is coincidental. Does the pain also radiate down your leg? If so, this could very well be sciatica. Another consideration is bursitis.

Here is some info:

The spotting may be due to a hormonal imbalance. Often, there is no explanation and next month your period could return to normal. Often, stress, diet and exercise can affect your cycle. Another consideration is that you may be experiencing the first signs of perimeopause. I would suggest dicussing this with your GYN, especially if the spotting continues over the course of the next week.

Please let me know if you have questions.
