Question

enlarged outer vagina

Sent to Health Experts October 08, 2006 3:18 a.m.

I am about 430 pounds and have been overweight for 26 years. My outer vagina was always a little large but recently I've noticed it's starting to hang down as my stomach does. It is soft like fat and not hard. Has my vagina stretched because of the stomach hanging on it?

Can I clarify....

is it your vaginal lips that are hanging down, or the area over your pubic bone where pubic hair normally grows?

Are you happy at your current weight? Have you sought any treatment for it?

it's directly under my fat hanging stomach. I guess the pubic bone you speak of. It's always been somewhat big but not it's streched just like the stomach. No, I hate it. I've lost 80 pounds so far and will lose it all one day. The lips aren't affected just the part with the hair.

Thanks for your answer. When you are very overweight, your body looks for places to fill up the fat cells. The area over the pubic bone has a thick 'fascia' however fat cells can spread into this area, bit like a pair of shorts, causing the area to droop. Fat is normally subcutaneous, which means it is only covered by skin. A lot of fat means the skin cannot 'hold it in' and gravity leads to the sagging. In itself it is nothing extra to worry about. Just keep on the healthy eating.

Its great you have lost this weight. Once you get a bit thinner we can look at gentle muscle exercise which will start to develop muscle tone underneath the fat and skin. Once this happens you will see a big improvement in shape.

You need to be aware that your skin has had a bit of punishment over the years so it may leave you with excess skin which will need surgery, but that is a long way off. Start using a vitamin E cream or massage oil on your sin now to encourage suppleness, it may help in the long term with regaining some elasticity.

Good luck, it may take a while but you will feel so much better.
