My husband had back surgury the 15th of Oct. He is now home. He was on oxycodone20mg twice a day Flexeril 3times a day and had oxcycodone 5mg for break thru pain. On friday he began hallucinating. I called and talked to the PA . She said to take him off the oxcodone which I did. He was pretty bad all of friday night. Yesterday he seemed fine until last night when he had a few hallucinations and then was fine. He still is not on the oxcycodone and seems to be doing much better but hallucinated for little while today. How long will this last and should I take him to the emergency room?

Hello,

Your husband should gradually improve as the rest of the oxycodone leaves his system. It can easily take 2-3 days for a healthy person to clear the drug, and even a little longer for someone who has been ill and isn't able to get any exercise to speed the drug metabolism. It may take until Tuesday for it all to be gone. The Flexeril can also cause hallucinations. The maximum dose is one 10 mg tablet three times a day, but it can be lowered to twice a day for people who are weak, debilitated, or elderly. If the hallucinations continue, you can ask to have his dose cut to 5 mg (that's assuming he's at the maximum now).
