I have recently gained weight (fat). I am normally under 10% bodyfat so I don't know if the following is normal. I have pockets of fat forming on the middle to outside of my pecs, and it is lumpy. The lumps are hard, painless, moveable, and only felt when I pinch the skin and pull it up from my chest. When I pinch a chunk of skin I can also see the lumps in the mirror. My doc (over the phone) told me it was nothing. What are these? will they go away as I lean out (i am restarting healthy eating and vigorous exercise)?

Hello,

If these are really pockets of fat then yes, they will disappear as you exercise and become leaner.

But the fact that you say that they hard, lumpy and movable could also point to fat tumors called lipomas. It is unlikely that you could have developed a number of lipomas at the same time , but your description leans towards them. And since you have gained weight , they are more likely to be localised pockets of fat.

I suggest that you try exercising and dieting and see if they decrease in size in 3 months, If they do not, then you will need to get an MRI scan for an accurate diagnosis.

I hope this helps.
