My 2 year old has a flesh colored mole on her right tricep which as been there since she was born. (I have a mole just like it on my right arm) Lately I have noticed that sometimes it will swell slightly and turn white - it reminds me of a bee sting. Then in just a few minutes it will go back to being flesh colored and hardly visible. Is this normal? - Donna H.

Reply to Pauline's Post: Thanks - I noticed it twice after she had been wet - a bath and then playing in the spinklers. But then noticed it today when she was playing with some other children indoors. It does look slightly pink around the edges. The rest of the skin color is fine and "no" is the answer to the rest of the questions.

From your description it sounds like the mole area is filling slightly with interstitial fluid causing the swelling of the area and the whiteness appearance. This could be due to local trauma such as scratching the area. Or a change in water content of the epidermis following the bath/games. The fact that it returns to normal very quickly indicates in is a transient change in local vascular permeability and sounds harmless.

At this moment in time, I would not be too concerned about this. There are a variety of changes in moles that are entirely benign so I would continue to keep an eye on all her moles as she grows up. If there are any that do concern you then start to keep a digital photo record as this can allow you to see changes over periods of time. Also ensure that she used high protection sun block when playing outside.
