I recently got home from a two week stay in the hospital for MRSA. I was treated with 2000 mg of Vancomycin a day by IV. I had no insurance and feel I didn't get the best of care. Anyway, my questions are am I disease free now? Can I get it again? Can you get it from kissing someone or sexual intercourse? I started taking aspirin yesterday on advice from a relative. Today, I woke up with a skin rash over most of my body. Is this cause for alarm? Is the Vanco out of my system? Is there things I shouldn't eat or drink. I have kids, are they at risk? I am freaking out here. Thank you. (I am a 43 year old woman)

Anyone can get MRSA as this is passed through direct contact with an infected person or contaminated objects or surfaces where the infection is laying. You are disease free at this point if you are through with the medication and are not running a fever or showing any signs of infection. The medication that you were given is known to be the best in treating staph infections such as this and actually as long as you are healthy chances of reinfection is rare as long as you wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap regularly, keep any sores or wounds bandaged so infection cannot get into them and watch contact with anyone with wounds or bandages as well. It is also best to avoid regular use of antibiotics which can cause antibiotic-resistant bacteria which means you would become immune to the antibiotics that help to fight the infection. There is no need for a special diet and there are no foods or liquids that you should not drink. It is usually not transmitted through sexual intercourse or kissing but the fact that direct contact with an infected individual makes this easy to catch. Make sure you are eating a healthy diet as this usually affects older people, sick individuals, or people with a low immune system so a daiyl vitamin suppliment might be a good idea as well. The rash you woke up with sounds as though it could be an allergic reaction so I would suggest that you take some Benadryl and see if this helps with the rash but if you had a fever when you were in the hospital it could be related to scarlett fever which usually follows a fever but at this point I would not be alarmed unless it continues to become worse then you would need to be seen again for a re-check. Your children are not at risk at this point but all of you need to be good about washing your hands regularly and avoiding contact with anyone who is ill or has wounds or cuts that could be carrying the infection. In most individuals this can be a one time illness and it never repeats itself so don't stress yourself out over this as this can only lead to other health issues. I feel as long as you are healthy and watch who you are in contact with then you will be fine although it is easy to become alarmed after dealing with an infection such as this.
