Severe back pain with fever ENTIRE FAMILY

Sent to Health Experts March 08 09:23 AM

Last week I had severe, debilitating low back pain that lasted about 6 days. I was sluggish and slept as much as possible. I dont know if I had a fever or not, but generally I felt achy and even touching my skin was uncomfortable; similar to when I have had the flu in years past. By Friday my 8 year old son was complaining of severe back pain and had a 103.5 fever. He was pale, with red rings around his eyes. He slept for the majority of the weekend and woke up a few times with nightmares. These nightmares were quite scary because he appeared completely awake; his eyes open and staring blankly into nothing, but screaming and crying as if he were awake. His fever did not disappear until last night (Tuesday). During this time, my husband and 6 year old son began developing the same symptoms. Severe back pain and high fever (at least 102.5 for both of them, fluctuating through out the day) and endless sleeping. Motrin seems to drop the fever for a few hours in the kids, and tylenol is helping my husband's fever. My back pain is still there but not as severe as it was. Both kids and my husband are miserable with the low back pain. What do we have and is it something that will need to run its course or do we need to see a doctor? Everyone is basically miserable, and of course we cant go to work or school. Please help. Thank you, Talisha Loa, Austin, Texas.

My neighbor is an RN and thinks we all have Mononucleosis, however other information available on the web does not verify this.

Sorry to say, but it sounds like you all have the good old fashioned flu bug. Stay hydrated and rest and hang in there! Remember, the aches and pains of the flu can manifest anywhere and as you all have most likely the same type of virus, you'll all have similar symptoms. Also, I agree with you in that it does not sound like mono to me. There is medication available to lessen the symptoms of the flu from your doctor but you need to start these meds as soon as symptoms begin and I think you all are too late for that.

Reply to Sheri Lilly-Howick's Post: I have had the flu before and never experienced days and days of severe back pain. This back pain is not just an ache. It has made it difficult to sit up and bend over and this pain still exists. If this is the flu, how long are we contagious to others? Do we need to wait until there has been no fever for more than 24 hours or just wait until there is no fever? Thanks for your time.

The period when an infected person is contagious depends on the age of the person. Adults may be contagious from one day prior to becoming sick and for three to seven days after they first develop symptoms. Some children may be contagious for longer than a week.

And while the back pain may be severe, it can be a symptom of the flu.
