I have a large lump on the back of my head. It is ...

I have a large lump on the back of my head. It is just above the hairline and very, very tender, there is also a shooting pain that seems to zap all of the color out of my face. Could this be a swollen lymph node?

How large is the lump and when did it first appear? Is it on the back, center of your scalp or on the side or on the back of your neck? Are you actually pale or it just hurts enough that it COULD "zap all your color?"

The lump is about an inch from my right ear (I have a similar "bump" on the left side but that's normal size). The lump on the right is tender to the touch.

At work, I had a shooting pain and my employees told me that my face went pale, their term was ghost white.

I noticed a tiny pain yesterday.

Yep, that's a swollen lymph node, which usually signifies there's an infection or foreign body of some sort that your body is trying to fight off. If you have any other symptoms such as a fever >103, chills, sore throat, cough, chest pain, or other signs of sickness, I would get in to see a doctor or community care center.   You may need to have a CBC and blood culture drawn to detect infection. However, sometimes your body can fight off infection alone so treating symptoms may be the best thing at this point (treat fever with Tylenol and runny nose with antihistamine, etc.) and if you're not better in 7-10 days or your symtoms worsen after 3 days, you can go in for antibiotics.

The only symptom that I have is pain. I've already taken aleve (about 6 hours ago) and that hasn't relieved the pain. Should I try acetaminophen?

You can take Ibuprofen (800 mg) and Tylenol (1000 mg) together. Then alternate them every 4 hours for a day or two to keep you comfortable. When you alternate 4 hours after the both area taken, start with Tylenol first then 4 hours later Ibuprofen then 4 hours after that Tylenol again. Hope you feel better! If, by some chance the bump gets bigger and hot and red then you probably should have it seen. I'd bet that you have a sore spot at the angle of your jaw or throat also. That is where other lymph nodes are located. Hope this helps!
