My mother has experienced a headache on the top of her ...

Sent to Health Experts June 16, 2006 9:13 p.m.

My mother has experienced a headache on the top of her head for four days. She has taken migraine medication to releave it, but it hasn't worked very well. This morning her headache subsided somewhat, but tonite her stomach is bloated and she is complaining of back pain. She has been lying in bed for the four days pretty regularly and has eaten nothing but watermelon and has had water to drink. Her ankles are not swollen and she has no other symptoms. Do you have any idea what might be the problem. She is terrified to see a doctor. She is visiting my sister and is not in her home town.

Does your mother have a fever -- or any other symptoms? For example, any urinary symptoms (e.g. urination urgency, frequency or odor. Does her urinary output seem abnormal (e.g. more or less than expected) given how much she is drinking?

Does your mother have any other health problems -- if so, what are they?

What, if any supplements/vitamins/over-the-counter medications/prescription medications does she take?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

She has no fever and no other symptoms besides abdominal fluid retention and lower backache.

Her urine looks regular, but she has urination urgency but very little voiding.

Not that I know of.

She was prescribed cafergot and has been taking it for her headache.

I believe your mother's symptoms strongly suggest a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).

The back pain, and reduced urinary output point specifically toward the kidney infection. From personal experience, I can tell you that a headache involving the top of the head also points in that direction.

The abdominal bloating can also be present with a UTI -- and may involve gas.

While I am sure that your mother is less than comfortable at the thought of going to an unfamiliar doctor -- a kidney or bladder infection is nothing to ignore -- especially for a not-so-young person.

I urge you to urge your mother to seek medical care as soon as possible.
