My 17 year old daughter has swelling in her legs and feet.

Sent to Health Experts July 03 08:27 AM

My 17 year old daughter has swelling in her legs and feet that started about 5 weeks ago. Had a rash as well when swelling first appeared. No fever ever present. Dramatic weight gain. Was taken off birth control pills 4 weeks ago, thinking it was an allergic reaction. Has been on Lexipro for four months, Prozac prior to that. Was put on diuretics for a week and upon return to the doctor was found to have a 7 pound increase in her weight (in one week, on diuretics). Doctor has done MRI on pituitary and brain (normal), ultra sound on legs (no clots), blood work (thyroid included) that all appears normal (proteins are borderline). Waiting for results on abdominal ultra sound. Still has swelling, and woke up the other morning with eyes and hands swollen, but that has diminished. Swelling still present in feet, and hurts to walk on them.    Also has had some memory issues that were not there before. The doctor is puzzled and so are we. What else should we check?

Hi,
I can appreciate your anxiety and concerns especially since the reports are normal...
Assuming that the urine reports & renal functions are normal .... I would believe that a rehumatological disease (like SLE) / a post infectious syndrome should be kept in mind..
The things to do would be an ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), acute phase reactants (like CRP) complement levels etc., and accordingly plan for other tests..
Other rare causes could be thought of as per the reports..
Here is a case report of a somewhat similar clinical picture

Reply to AYURVEDICDOC's Post: She was on birth control for about 4 months when the swelling first occurred. She has been off of them for over a month. She has had two regular periods since then. She has been on anti depressants for about 1 1/2 years, first on Prozac, then recently (March) switched to Lexipro.
