Sent to Health Experts August 15, 2006 7:44 a.m.

For four years now, my son (9 years old) has had this cycling disorder that the Dr's have not been able to diagnose. Like clockwork, every six weeks, he develops an unexplained fever with headache and usually a sore throat for the first two days, then the third day just fever. His Dr. realized that it was repetitive, so he had me start charting his illnesses, they have also done routine blood work when he is healthy and unsick, but it always comes back normal. Occassionaly with this his blood sugar will spike into the 200's. (We have had to check his sugar since he was 3, because of the spikes in sugar) I have now moved to another state and do not have health insurance to continue his care, I would like some ideas as to what this might be. Since the Dr.'s have not been able to figure it out, I was hoping I could give the Dr. some ideas. Thank you, I just worry so much about him.

Hello,

It is possible that your son is suffering from Malaria. Malaria is a disease where the fever occurs in a cyclic repetitive pattern. At the time of the fever, the patient has flu-like symptoms like a cold, sore throat. The fever occurs with chills and rigor. But in malaria, the fever usually occurs in 2-3 day cycles. I have not heard of 6 week cycles. You can try out a home diagnostic kit for malaria available at http://www.anytestkits.com/rapid_test_malaria.htm

I hope this helps.

I am sorry that I did not clarify. He gets sick every six weeks, almost exactly. With symptoms lasting 2-3 days. Please help me.

Hello,

The closest I have come to the symptoms described by you is in Marshall's fever or PFAPA (Periodic Fever Aphthous Ulcer pharyngitis cervical Adenitis) This fever is a combination of the symptoms above and starts in children below the age of 5 years. But it continues for many years with episodes of fever occurring every 2-8 weeks (usually 3-4 weeks). The cause is unknown. The fever lasts for 3-6 days and then the chile gets better. The child is usually completly healthy in between the episodes. There are no positive laboratory findings during this time.

I do not remember the level of blood sugar being recorded or researched anywhere.

Treatment is by cimetidine, tonsillectomy and occasionally steroids.

Please see more abot PFAPA here:

I hope this helps.
