Question

cytomegalovirus mono

Sent to Health Experts August 15, 2006 8:33 a.m.

I have been diagnosed with CMV mono--been running temp of 100.5-102 intermittently for past 2 weeks, having malaise, muscle aches, no appetite, etc. My question is, as I'm Director of Nursing in Prison Healthcare Setting, when would I be considered "not contagious" ? My MD has told me he really doesn't know.

Female , Age: 40

rest, tylenol, advil

If you are running a fever that is the time that you can be the most contagious, when you still have some of the symptoms but have been on the antibiotics and are not running a fever that is when you are considered "not contagious" anymore. When it comes to healthcare and being around others who are sick they have a lowered immune system and that is why when you are running a fever they can be the most apt to catch the virus from you. Continue to take the tylenol and monitor your fever but it needs to stay at a normal level without the aid of fever reducers for you to safely not be able to pass the virus to another individual.

You stated I was to be on antibiotics, but, this is viral--MD has me on no antibiotics as I have no secondary s/s infections. Would that change your answer?

Sometimes they will if there are secondary infections you are correct. If you have not had any secondary infections then yes this would change my answer. You do still have to be careful when you are running a fever but since you only have a viral infection but are past the first 5-7 day incubation period chances are that you are not considered contagious at this time. Continue to take the Tylenol to keep your fever down and try to intake a bland diet to start getting your appetite back and rebuild your immune system but since you havwe not had any secondary infections then you should be considered not contagious at this point.
