SCARLET FEVER ca early 1900's/back complication???
Sent to Health Experts September 12 06:43 PM

My mother (d.o.b. 1899) had SCARLET FEVER as a young girl.
As an adult, she had to wear a back brace. What is the connection between scarlet fever and having to wear a back brace? (She died in 1943 of toxemia when pregnant with what would have been my younger sister.) I was told that when pregnant with me (I was born in 1939) the pregnancy strengthened her enough so she threw the back brace away. I've read a little general information about SCARLET FEVER but can find no references to complications involving needing a back brace. Can you direct me to any information? Thank you. Alice (on Cape Cod)

Your mother had scarlet fever which is an exotoxin-mediated disease which arises from a group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection which can lead to rheumatic fever. Some patients with acute rheumatic fever present with arthritis two to three weeks after having untreated group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis. Common noncardiac and diagnostic signs of acute rheumatic fever are polyarthritis and arthralgias which are more common and more severe in young adults with rheumatic fever. Your mother was a young adult when she wore the brace. Most likely it was to prevent complications (e.g. scoliosis) from rheumatoid arthritis in her spine and in her costovertebral joints which are at the heads of the ribs.
