My six year old just woke up w/ dry heaves and his fever is 103.9. He hasn't had a fever that high since he was a baby. I gave him Motrin. Should I be concerned about how high the fever is?

How long ago did you give the Motrin? Hs the temperature come down since then?

What other things have you done to reduce his temperature?

I gave him Motrin around 8:00 before he went to bed. His fever was only 99.8 then. I gave him more about 15 minutes ago. I have been giving him liquids and he has a cold wet cloth on his head. What else cana I do, a cold bath?

Thank you!

Rather than a cold bath, I recommend luke warm as you don't want to chill him too quickly. Giving him cold drinks, will help too. Let him sit up with layers of clothing that can go on and off depending how hot he is.

The very high temperature could be a combination of being unwell and being tucked up in bed (childrens internal thermostat is not so well controlled as adults), so unless he has a rash, or cold hands and feet then I would be inclined to wait a few hours to let the Motrin kick in. He could have some junior tylenol in about 2 hours time. Sometimes combining tylenol and ibuprofen gives a better temperature control.

If the fever is sustained despite all the above then give his doctor a ring. If he feels like eating try him with dry toast, or ginger biscuits as these can be better for upset stomaches.

Regards
