I am having like pain on my left side of my stomach .

I am having like pain on my left side of my stomach . Its like pain on my lower side by my rib cage. every time i lay down, laugh, get up and just pain. what could it be????

my last period was july 2006 but i have irregular periods. I have periods like 3 or 4 times a year.I cant be pregnet cuz i am on birth control ( the shot). the pain is sharp.When I press where it hurts, it hurts more. i have no nausea no vomiting or no dirarrhea. all i have is sharp pain on the left sife of my stomach under my rib cage. i did miscarry at 8 weeks of pregnacy back in june 2006. this pain just started like 2 days ago and i think it could be my kidneys? i dont drink water, but just like 5 to 6 cokes a day and smoke like 10 to 15 cigg. a day.
