Sent to Health Experts October 08, 2006 7:23 p.m.

what are the most obvious symptoms of a"DVT" of the lower leg? does the entire leg sometimes below the knee, swell turn bright red become hot to the touch, throb, and have patches that appear purple, also cause one's fever to rise above 100 and cause weight bearing almost impossible. once when an episode as i have described happened i was told it was cellulitis, that time ablister (black) developed and broke ,i was treated for what was called a leg ulcer for more than a year , all was finally healed, leaving the outer layer of skin ruff, reddish and itchy no open lesions though. this last episode started ,then went away just to come back involving all of the lower leg and ankle and top of foot it actually felt life the tissue and muscle was cooking . any ideas to this problem? and yes I have kept it elevated, and applied ice, this episode has been active for going on the fifth day. it is improving quickly , I ama diabetic #2 i do have fluctuating hypertension, i am 58 years old ,i was a blue baby and anemic most of my childhood and young adult life iwas treated with B12 and liver injections in the muscles in the 1960s then again in the 1970s i had an hystorectomy/oopherectomy at thage of 23 because of endometriosis. I had 1 year of HRT during the 1980s then just discontinued it, my entire life to age 35 i was considered underweight then from 35 to about 50 i was normal weight most of the time but began to gain and had to watch my weight ,at age 51 my bloodsugars went out of control and i started gaining weight 52 started being treated with novolin70/30from 52 years to 55 used novolin 70/30 andgainedweight to 60lbs overweight was changed to Lantis and ineightmonths gained another70 lbs, like 10lbs a month,    I stopped seeing my DR. went back to novolin 70/30 thats where i am at now ,not gaining weight but not losing it either, also i had some test done on my legs Ultrasound, the Dr. said that my arteries are great but that my veins are shot. He explained that they canreplace arteries but they cannot replace or repair veins ,sug. that i don't ever have feet flat on floor while sitting, carry with me a foot type stool about 5inches high, try elevating my legs aboce my heart ,4 or 5 times a day for 15 minutes don't stand for long periods of time. i have tried to give what info i thought might help you with some type of an possible answer. thanks, Diane

Hello

It surely could be a DVT. At the very least it sounds like that or a possible recurrence of cellulitis. I highly recommend going to the ER tonight to have it checked out. It is better to be safe than sorry, and in either case you will need treatment soon.
