Hello, oldest son to the E.R last night w fever
Sent to Health Experts November 18 08:18 PM

Hello, We took our oldest son to the E.R last night after trying to treat him here at home with mild stomach aches and feeling sick to his stomach and a fever. Also he has sinus problems and constantly breathes through his mouth. He also hasn't eaten much. His mom tried checking it orally and under his arm and once under his arm it read almost 99 or near, but we didn't think that was really very correct. We decided to take him to the E.R here in town and he was seen fairly quickly. The nurse used first an ear therm and didn't trust the reading , then a digital oral temp, which obviously was way off.   His mom told her that we tried under his arm and frowned and said , nope that isn't too good of a method to use when one is that feverish.      She told us and my son that they first tried ear, or Oral and then if needed to check rectally. Underarm only as last resort, he finnaly coperated and his temp rectally was 102 mild flu was she right using this method in this situation?

Hello

Rectal temperatures are the most accurate. If temperatures taken by mouth or ear are done correctly they provide the next most accurate results. Axillary temperatures are the least accurate and should only be used as a last resort. If a person's temperature seems to be higher than what the oral or ear thermometers read or if the oral or ear thermometers read over 102 then the temperature is usually taken rectally for the most accurate reading.

Depending on the child's age sometimes they will just not cooperate. The nurse was correct when she told you that axillary temperatures are used as a last resort. If you are ever in doubt about your child's actual temperature a rectal temp is almost always 100% accurate.

I am attaching a web-site that will help you should this happen again in the future.

TAKING YOUR CHILD'S TEMPERATURE

I hope that your son is feeling better.

Sincerely,

Bunny

Thanks very much for your response and information and link too!   My son hasn't had a rectal temp in a long time and Im sure if his mom or I explain this to him he will understand.
