how do you take care of a infection in your finger and how do you know if it is infected?

Most likely it would be red and swollen. There may be some drainage and probably some pain. Do you know what caused it? You might try soaking it in some salt water, and if there's an opening somewhere, put a little antibiotic ointment on it. If you are running a fever, or the swelling becomes worse, or the drainage is dark yellow or green, you will need to have it seen by a doctor.

Reply to Kerry's Post: it is a red and swollen. i have no idea what it is from it just showed up one day i thought that may be it was a insect bite because it really itches and yesterday i have to use a needle to to put a opening in it . i did sterilize it before hand and now it is just pain full and it has been like this for about two or three days

You will probably need an antibiotic orally to stop the infection. If it has already been there a few days. I would have it checked by a doctor.
