I am a 52 year old woman, going through menopause. I haven't had sex in 14 years. I recently felt itching in the vagina. When I felt the area and inserted my finger in my vagina, I felt an extreme swelling that could be pushed (like a balloon full of water). Please advise. I've never heard of anything like this.

Hello

You are more than likely describing a prolpase.

If the swelling is on the front wall -a cysocele
on the back wall - an eneterocele or rectocele.

As you become menopausal the hormone dependent tissues "down below" loose some of their strength and this weekness can result in strtching of the muscles of the vagina which then fall (prolapse) down. Behind these sellings sit your bladder (cystocele) or rectum (retocele).

You do of course need to see a gynaecologist o have this confirmed and to discuss th option of surgical repair should you wish.

Regards
