If more than 50% of the area under the nail is affected, any deformity of the finger tip or inability to move or bend suggesting bone fracture, or any problem with circulation to the finger tip all indicate a trip to ER is required.
If the pressure is building up underneath the nail then a doctor can create a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure. In some circumstances the nail will be removed to allow for easy access. Nail will take about 4- 6 months to grow back.
Tylenol can be taken for pain but ibuprofen is better as it helps pain and is anti-inflammatory so helps with swelling.
Some people find that arnica gel and tablets can help.
If you don't go to ER then you need to keep an eye on it to ensure no infection sets in, or no damage to circulation has occurred.
