right hand index finger tip is swollen and red. Have tried Bactroban 2% mupirocin cream for 2 wks. and it did nothing. Dr. gave me cephalexin 500 MG (30 capsules) dosage was 3 times a day. Last dosage was last night. This A M looks a little better, but its still red and looks terrible. Dr wants to send me for x rays, I don't think its necessary since I did not cut the finger, never have my nails done, so I don't know where the infection came from. Your thoughts on this?   Loretta Kelly

Hello

An x-ray of the finger will show if the infection is as deep as the bone in your finger. Yes, I do recommend that you have the x-ray. It isn't looking for a break, but how extensive the infection is. Since antibiotics topically and orally haven't worked, the next step is to check for osteomyelitis, which would be an infection of the bone.

Kerry's answer makes sense, could you tell me how serious is this infection? Thank you.

Well, the x-ray would have to be done to determine if this is the cause before we need to get worried.

Bone infections are much more common lately than they have been in the past. Even such infections like staph and strep can get into bone and deeper tissues.

I'm here for any more questions you may have.
