SWELLING, REDNESS, PAIN IN ANKLES
Sent to Health Experts September 30 02:58 PM

My husband took a very bad fall, injurying his head (bleeding on the brain). He seems to be recovering OK from the head injury, but since being released from the hospital his ankles/feet are extremely wollen, there are red areas and it's very painful just to touch and when he tries to walk, the pain is so bad he can't. He has had bouts with Gout in the past and he seems to feel this may be back again.   We have tried soaking his feet in Epsom salts, which didn't seem to work and recently we have tried ice packs, 20 mins on, 20 mins off. There still doesn't seem to be any improvement.

Due to the bleeding he had in the brain, he has been instructed not to take any type of anti-inflammatory medication as this might cause the clot to start bleeding again.   We have left messages for the neurosurgeon who saw him at the ER after his fall, but he has not returned our call. Our primary doctor won't provide much advice because she has never seen him as a patient. At this point, we are in a catch 22 as he can't walk and I can't get him to a doctor.

We are at our wits end to try and get some type of advice as to what will help alleviate the pain and swelling enough that he can get up and move around. Any suggestions as to a non-anti-inflammatory solution or what we have already tried, would be greatly appreciated. He is currently taking Tylenol and dilantin.

Honestly I would have him seen at the ER as if you have tried the Epsom Salts and he cannot take Aleve or any anti-inflammatory he needs not only pain relief but to check and see if this gout has returned. I am so sorry that they have not returned your calls as they should but there are no safe OTC products except Tylenol with his condition because other than heat, ice and soaking that is all that can be done at home that I am able to recommend. But he needs pain relief and this way they can address the gout if this is the case and also allow him to get some relief from the pain he is in.
