I have terrible pain coming from the the C sections of the neck and radiating down below my ear and even up into my head on the left side. I do have some bulging in my neck but the pain is worse below my ear and up my head. Can you shed some light on this?

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: I think the bulging I feel is in the muscle, I do have bulges in the spine area. Movement makes it much worse, haven't had any injury to my neck or head, I don't have migraines and never have. The only meds I take is for HBP and low dose zoloft for minor depression.

I appreciate anything you can do to shed some light on this. I'm in so much pain, I've just never been through this before.

One thing I can tell you, on the same left side I have apartial torn rotator cuff and a knot on at the end of my collar bone. Please help me. Thanks for the free service.

Did the neurologist do a CT scan to rule out fracture, bulging or herniated disc?

You probably have soft tissue inflammation which swells causing pain, limited movement and nerve compression (causing pain radiation)

Start with Ibuprofen every four hours regardless of pain needs, as tolerated, for three days, ice to area for 15 min 2-3 times daily and limit activity as much as possible for 2-3 days. Massage area gently, for several minutes every hour.

After three days start alternating ice (15 min) and heat (15 min), continue Ibuprofen, evry 6 hours, limit activity to non painful movement and do not lift more than 3-5 pounds. Continue massage, and add daily warm baths with epsom salts.

After a week of the above intervention you can begin gentle, careful exercise. It would be best to participate in Physical Therapy (covered by health insurance with referral from the Doctor) They can demo and supervise exercise to prevent re-injury, and may use traction, ultrasound, massage and acupressure to treat pain and inflammation.

Keep track of your pain in a journal, including intensity, quality, duration, what makes it worse/better and effect on daily activities. If it does not resolve with basic home treatment return to your Family Doctor with this info for further testing, and possible treatments. These may include stronger anti-inflamatories, muscle relaxors, injections into the area, brace/immobilizer, or long term physical therapy.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: I have ulceritive colitis and can only stay on antinflamatory meds for a short time before I start bleeding again. Would soft tissue inflamation cause my head to hurt and feel sore to touch? I do have a torn rotator cuff on the same side, could this cause the inflamation and pain?

The soft tissue inflammation disrupts normal blood flow and nerve conduction, causing the pain you describe.

The torn rotator cuff causes over use of the scapular elevator muscles (such as the trapezius) which originate from the cervical spine. This can also cause or contribute to pain in the neck and headaches.

These factors, combined with your ulcerative colitis may make treatment of your pain more complex though not impossible. You can begin by home remedies of ice, rest, NSAIDS, and massage, but this is ultimatley going to require medical intervention and long term physical therapy.

I hope you are able to finally find some relief, please let me know if you need more information.
