Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD(O's Post: I was not disgnosed for this. I know that my spleen is enlarged because I can feel it & it happened before 7 to 10 years ago they ran tests with no results said it must be a virus. I got better till it started again this week.

I tried looking up reasons for enlarged spleen but no real clues to my symptoms. Bad choices like Lukiamia was a possible but unlikely diagnosis. I like to be informed before I go to the doctor to avoid the unnessasary tests as much as possible.

Hello,

The commonest cause of an enlarged spleen together with dry mouth is anaemia. Since anaemia is most commonly due to deficiency of iron, it is likely that you are also suffering from other deficiencies like Vitamin B (a very common cause of dry mouth) and fluids (another common cause of dry mouth as well as headaches).

If you have ever travelled in the tropics, your enlarged spleen could have been the result of infections like Malaria, Typhoid, Leishmaniasis etc. All these cause an enlarged spleen that remains enlarged even after the symptoms of the disease have died down.

Other causes can be :

- Liver Cirrhosis which causes all the symptoms that you have, like enlarged apleen, dry mouth and headache, as the liver fails to metabolize the nutrients you eat.

- Vitamin A Toxicosis - This can also cause an enlarged spleen and dry mouth but I have not come across anything on headaches.

You can see more about enlarged spleen, the symptoms and the causes here:

The simplest diagnosis is that you are suffering from dehydration which is responsible for the headache and dry mouth. And perhaps the resulting weakness has made you more conscious of your spleen.

Please drink a lot of fluids and juices, especially lemon juice ( a wedge of lemon squeezed in a glass of water with a pinch of salt and a tablespoon of sugar) thrice daily. If you do not feel better in a week, please see a doctor for a thorough check up.

I hope that helps.

Thank you.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD(O's Post: I thought it might be anemia and started taking iron yesterday. How long does it take for the body to absorb the iron and is there anything that helps it absorb it better?

Same question for vitamin B.

I doubt I am dehydrated as I always drink a lot of water especially being a Florida boy it is a necessity in the summer.

What are some of the most common symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis?

Hello,

Both iron and Vitamin B are absorbed into the body very fast. The results would depend on how deficient you are. If the deficiency is less, you should start feeling better sooner.

Since iron is absorbed in an acidic medium, please drink lemon juice about half an hour before you take the iron. This may however cause some amount of acidity, so you can drink the juice before your lunch (or dinner) and take the the iron afterwards. An adequate protein level is also necessary to help in faster absorption.

Since Vitamin B is a water soluble vitamin, adequate amount of fluids and proteiens are all that is necessary for its absorption.

Some of the common symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis are:

- No symptoms at all if the cirrhosis is mild

- Exhaustion and fatigue due to inability to metabolize any nutrients,

_ Jaundice

-Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, just under the ribs.

-nausea and vomiting with loss of appetite

- General Weakness.

You can see more about the symptoms of liver cirrhosis here:

I hope that helps.

Thank you.
