Question

Abnormally long spotting after starting birth control pill

Sent to Health Experts August 10, 2006 7:46 p.m.

My question is that I had a baby 3 1/2 months ago and I breast fed for almost 2 months. Last month (July 10th) I had my first period (it was a regular 7 day period) and then immediately got back on the pill. For the last 2 weeks now I have had some spotting (pretty light, only really need a liner) but it doesn't seem to be going away. No headaches or cramps, fatigue or anything. Not sure if this is because I recently gave birth? Or maybe because I just started the pill again? I understand my hormones are probably a little out of whack. I'm 28 and had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, healthy delivery and healthy baby.

It usually takes a good 3 months or so for your body to get used to the hormones of the pill, so spotting would be a pretty normal occurrence. If it does continue though the rest of your cycle, then I would mention this to your doctor, as it could be a hormonal imbalance.

Thank you. I went in for my annual pap smear last Friday and the Dr acted like it was no big deal with the spotting after birth and starting the pill I just wasn't sure if it was supposed to last this long? I took the 3 weeks of pills and then instead of taking the brown (sugar ones that you are supposed to take when you're on your period I just went on to a new pack because I just assumed I was having my period eventhough it's light like spotting so I was thinking that probably screwed me up as well.

It is probably due to having the baby, breastfeeding, going on the pill and skipping the inactive pills so you will need to give your body some time to adjust to the hormones.
