I am almost 40 yrs old, I had an MRI 1 1/2 weeks ago because I have been really bad headaches.   My doctor told me I had no tumors or cancer, no signs of anyurism or stroke, no bleeding. There was however gliosis found. He was kind of evasive on the issue, but told me usually it means nothing, but they want to run another one in 6 wks to 3 months. If nothing has changed, then it probably means nothing, but if something has changed, they will run more tests, but he didn't say for what? I have 6 kids at home, and a husband currently in the hospital. Can you please help me understand what this is, to either put my mind to rest from the worrying, or what further testing they would possibly be. Diabetes & thyroid problems run on my bio mothers side, and on my fathers side, the only thing I know of is that my grandmother died from a brain anyurism, and my grandfather had macular degeneration in his eyes.

Hello,
Gliosis simply refers to increased proliferation of glial tissue in the brain. The glial tissue is made of glial cells which form the structural component of the brain, just like fat cells in the breast form the structure and the mammary glands are the one that do the work i.e. secrete milk. Gliosis can occur due to any cause which causes degeneration of the neurons (functional cells of brain), so that the glial cells increase in number to occupy that space.

As your doctor said gliosis without any symptoms means nothing and only follow up is required. Also the headache in your case is unlikely to be related to Gliosis in any way. However if the gliosis is changing or increasing in subsequent tests, further tests in the form of PET scan or contrast CT may be required to rule out any tumor.

Regards.
Dr. G

Reply to Dr A Gupta's Post: Thanks for answering, but you said gliosis can occur due to any cause, what are the possiblilites of this cause, and if degeneration of the neurons is happening, what does that mean as far as my day to day living?

Thank you, that does help me to know that hopefully, it will be nothing to worry about, or what some of the possiblities they would test for. Thanks!
