Question

Swallowing

Sent to Health Experts March 31, 2006 5:17 p.m.

I am looking for a solution for a problem that affects my son, Customer (name blocked for privacy). He has a problem with his swallowing. He is 4 months old, being born 7.5 weeks early on November 21, 2005 (he is a twin). He has a heart issue that is being dealt with by the Children's Mercy Hospital in KC MO by some great doctors.

Customer (name blocked for privacy) has a problem with is his swallowing that the doctors at CMH in KC MO have no answer for. Customer (name blocked for privacy) has had a NG feeding tube since the day that he was born until about 2.5 weeks ago. The doctors took the tube out and placed a "Mickey button" in his stomach for his feedings. He has had a problem with reflux. The doctors at CMH did a surgery on the fondo (spelling may be wrong) when they put the Mickey button in, to help the reflux from happening. [Which leads me to tell you about another problem that he has, after his “feeding” he goes through this gagging episode that he acts as though he going to throw up, like dry heaves. This will make his eyes water and he starts to cry when he can get his breath back.] They told us that about 7 -10 days after our return home that we should start feeding him by mouth to see if he tolerates it - but he has not. He breast feeds OK because he lies on his side to feed. But when he lies on his back or in a sitting position he sucks about 3 times and then he cries inconsolably, as though he is in extreme pain. As he has the formula in his mouth from the 3 sucks, he arches his back, opens his eyes big and swallows very hard almost as though he is swallowing a lot of air with the formula. This is when the crying starts and he will not return back to the bottle after that. Customer (name blocked for privacy) also has very small nairs and he has nose bleeds when he cries, he "bats" at his left ear, (our hometown doctor said that he does not have an ear infection). He had heart surgery to place a shunt in the top of the heart. He was sucking just fine before the surgery. After the surgery he developed this problem.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Do you have a suggestion as to what tests need to be done to help find an answer?
