My Mom is 79 years old, has hypertension, lower back pain and most recently severe swelling of the fee and ankles. Her Dr. recently said her potasium levels are low. She also has a hear murmer. She cannot take hard pain killers for her back because they make her dizzy etc... Her Dr. says to try and do more walking to eliviate the swelling but her ankles and feet are so swollen it is difficult for her to get around at all. I am not convinced this Dr. is taking her symptos seriously enough. He ordered an Ultra sound of her heart but she has to wait 3 weeks for an appoitment! any advise you could give would be greatly appreciated.

If she is unable to get up due to the swelling of the feet, getting the swelling down is where you need to start. If this is partially due to the heart, you will have to wait on that one. But in the mean time for the swelling, avoid sitting for long periods of time, keep feet elevated as much as possible. Watch all food she consumes, so much has sodium in it. Example; soda pop can have as much as 50mg or more. Drink plenty of water, which helps flush the system. Coffee is a natural diuretic too. Hopefully some of this will help a bit with her feet etc.. as far as her back, MOIST heating pad hopefully will help some until hopefully she can get her feet down a bit. Hopefully in the AM her feet are less swollen, to where she can take advantage of a little walking around etc..

Best of luck to you both, Hope this helps, If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don’t forget to click the *accept* button!
