My 6 year old daughter came home from school yesterday complaining of pains in her knees. Her knees were swolen and very hot. Later in the evening she started to develop large re blotches all over her mid section with some small raised bumps. I gave her motrin and Benadryl. She slept all knight but this morning she still has the pain and the blothches and is complaining that her heart is racing. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

REPLIED Check Mark

I am not a paediatrician, however my concern is that she has an inflammatory response possibly due to a bacterial infection.

I would like her to see her doctor today. If the blotches do not go pale when pressed with a glass, I would like you to take her to the ER straight away.

Without seeing the blotches, it is impossible to have a clear diagnosis however heat and swelling in a joint with a rash need investigating.

Children do have faster heart rate than adults, however a racing heart could again indicate an infection.

My Paediatrician has hours starting at 12:00 and he said he would take Sydney first. The blotches do turn white when pushed. do you think I can wait?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

If they turn white, then that is a good sign and yes waiting till the first session should be fine. Although if she experiences any headache, or shortness in breath then do go straight to ER.

I'm glad your paediatrician can fit her in. In the meantime continue with the benadryl and motrin at the specified dosage times.

Best wishes
