Question

need to learn more about BED SORES

Sent to Health Experts June 10, 2006 11:14 p.m.

My son just recived his second Heart Transplant March 27th 2006. In the process,
in bed now for almost six months..Bedsore has been treated with VAC machine only on the
sore on his Butt...The Sore itself has not yet
healed completely....Should he go back on the
VAC??? as this sore is really ugly. 1 1/2 inches across and about the same up and down....just alittle smaller than when it was discovered..   To add to the above he has
developed a new sore on his chest about the same size but not as deep.   Please advise soonest, as he is now in RE-HAB...HIs new heart is doing fine, but very concerned about
the above BedSores.

I'm very sorry to hear of your son's illness. I am familiar with the multiple complications of compromised skin integrity and wound care in a patient with compromised immune systems. Please provide a few more details, so I may answer your question (s) entirely.

Is he being seen by a wound care specialist for treatment and therapy?

Have the wounds been evaluated and cultured?

Is he at an inpatient rehab hospital?

Who does his wound care outside the hospital?

When the VAC was originally prescribed, was a wound care management plan determined, and if so is this the same wound care being used at this time?

Was VAC terminated for a reason besides completion of therapy?

Besides the question of returning to VAC are you seeking information on current available treatments for inpatient wound care, or home mangement of wounds after discharge?

Any information you can provide to guide my answer will be helpful in providing your answer. I will watch for your response in the morning and prepare your answer.
