My 94 year old mother is under hospice care and we have been told that her life expectency should be days, not weeks. My question is: She has lost circulation in her left foot, which has turned dark purple, is cold to the touch and has no pulse. She is too weak to have surgery. She is on heavy medication for pain. Her lungs are filling with fluids. In your experience with this kind of situtation, how many days could she last?

We have been told that her days are numbered. She is on a DNR and only getting her regular medication and very strong pain medication. She is very week. Recovering from pneumonia, lungs are filling again and she can not caugh to help clear. Hospice says she has days, not weeks. The foot is purple and and has been spreading up the ankle slowly, but cold and no pulse in the foot. She is in tremendous pain and the drug has kept her under most of the time. She has not been taking in fluids for several days, until this morning. She was able to drink about 4 ounces of water and eat 2 oz. of oatmeal. Her heart is very weak and has ben in congestive failure for months. She has a strong will to live and it looks like it will take the circulation problem to be the final straw. They are unable to do surgery or give her anything for the foot. As a family we know her time is close and will miss her. My problem is that I live 1500 miles away and want all my family, grandchildren to be there for her funeral and we must drive. We are trying to make plans and not sure how long someone can hold on in this situation. Also she doesn't appear to know who anyone around her and this just started happening. She has always had a great mind and been able to talk to all of us. Thanks

Thank you, Steve for letting me know the details.

I have to agree, what the mitigating factor is that her circulation is so poor du to the CHF, that infection will obviously be a factor.

As you live so far, I would suggest that you make plans for the end of the week. Her heart is very weak and the CHF will make it weaker.

My Grandmother had almost the same situation and it was three days until her CHF was so bad, her heart couldn't keep up.

You may want to talk to family members and hold the funeral for a day or two to allow everyone to arrive. This came into play when my Mother-in-law died in England and we live in CA.

Please let me know if you have any other questions over the weekend.
